FST files patent case against MS, CDW

Having secured a windfall in a patent case against Oracle settled earlier in the year, ipernica (ASX:IPR) business associate Financial Systems Technology (FST) is using one of the same patents to pursue legal action against Microsoft and IT product reseller CDW Corporation.
ipernica, which provides technology IP licensing and commercialisation services, on Wednesday disclosed that FST has filed charges in a US court alleging violation of two patents. Victoria-based FST sells licenses for transactional and billing software.
The patent entitled “easily expandable data processing system and method” was used in the US lawsuit lodged by FST and aided by ipernica, which Oracle agreed to settle in February in a mainly confidential agreement.
The second patent relates to “data processing and [a] method for maintaining cardinality in a relational database.”
While ipernica did not explicitly state it will be providing assistance with the latest suits, its involvement in the FST-Oracle case had earned the company a $7 million chunk of the settlement, before its own legal expenses.
When this settlement was announced, ipernica revealed plans to use the windfall to support aerial mapping service subsidiary Nearmap, which it operates in addition to its IP commercialisation activities.
Nearmap provides maps at a higher resolution that can be provided by satellite mapping to entities including government departments.
IPR shares stayed flat on Wednesday at $0.050.
